Why Is My Washer Shaking or Going Out of Balance?

A washing machine that shakes, bangs, or goes out of balance during the spin cycle can be more than just annoying. Excessive vibration may indicate an uneven load, incorrect leveling, worn suspension components, or another mechanical problem. Understanding the cause early can help prevent additional damage and more expensive repairs.

1. Check the Laundry Load

An uneven laundry load is one of the most common causes of washer vibration. Heavy items such as towels, blankets, comforters, or bath mats can collect on one side of the drum during the spin cycle. Pause the washer, redistribute the items evenly, and restart the cycle. If the problem happens frequently with normal loads, there may be a mechanical issue.

2. Make Sure the Washer Is Level

A washer must sit firmly and evenly on the floor. If one of the leveling feet is not making proper contact, the machine can rock or vibrate excessively as the spin speed increases. Check that all four feet are touching the floor and that the washer does not move when you gently push on opposite corners.

3. Worn Suspension Components

The suspension system controls the movement of the tub during washing and spinning. Depending on the washer design, it may use suspension rods, shock absorbers, springs, or a combination of these parts. When suspension components wear out, the tub can move excessively, causing shaking, banging, repeated balancing attempts, or problems reaching full spin speed.

4. The Washer Cannot Reach Full Spin Speed

Modern washers monitor the balance of the load before reaching high spin speeds. If excessive movement is detected, the washer may slow down, redistribute the load, and try again. This can cause the cycle to remain at the same time for several minutes or repeatedly extend the spin cycle. If it happens with normal loads, the washer may need professional diagnosis.

5. Other Mechanical Problems

Excessive vibration can also be caused by worn bearings, a damaged basket or tub, loose components, or problems with the drive system. These issues may also produce grinding, knocking, or other unusual noises during the spin cycle. A professional inspection can determine the exact cause and help prevent additional damage to the washer.

When Should You Call for Washer Repair?

If your washer regularly shakes violently, bangs against the cabinet, moves across the floor, repeatedly adds time to the cycle, or cannot complete the final spin, it should be inspected. Continuing to use a washer with severe vibration can cause additional damage to the suspension, tub, bearings, and other internal
